SODA FIRING, Fall 2025

$350.00

Come participate in my soda kiln firing!

Each participant may bring bisqued pottery made with clay suitable for cone 10 firing. Bring a variety of sizes and shapes, no taller than 10 inches. The activities will take place over 4 different sessions:

Nov. 2 - Glazing Day: You will bring your bisque pottery to my studio and use my glazes and flashing slips that are formulated for cone 10, reduction firing.

Nov. 8 - Loading Day: You will come to my kiln pad (at my studio) where we will discuss how the kiln works and how loading the pottery affects the outcome of the firing. Together, we will attach wads to pots and load your pottery into the kiln. This process can take several hours.

Nov. 9 - Firing Day: Early in the morning, I will light up the burners and the firing will commence. Depending upon a number of factors (the pots in the kiln, the weather, etc.), the firing may take 12, 14, 16 or more hours. You may attend all or some of the firing. There are two particularly interesting bursts of activity that I would recommend attending. Throughout the firing, I will explain what is happening inside the kiln and atmospheric firing in general. You will help with all aspects of the day, including observing flames and cones, record keeping, adjusting dampers and spraying soda.

Nov. 15 - Unloading Day: The kiln will need to cool before we can unbrick the door and unload the pots. At this last gathering, we will observe and discuss how the flames contributed to the surfaces. We will also discuss and begin the process of “cold working” to remove wads or surface blemishes. Finally, the participants will assist with kiln pad clean up.

Most appropriate for students with some experience with clay. This experience is intended as an add-on to taking a class with me, though that is not a requirement to participate. If you will not be in a class with me leading up to the firing, please email me to verify that the clay you will be using is suitable and will not melt at cone 10. We can also discuss my studio location for planning purposes.

Soda firing is an activity inherently involving some risk. Participants should be aware of the risks of close proximity to flame and potentially sharp objects. Please dress and behave accordingly. I will provide personal protective equipment appropriate for the various tasks (goggles, gloves, etc.).
