SODA FIRING, Fall 2025
Come participate in my soda kiln firing!
Each participant may bring bisqued pottery made with clay suitable for cone 10 firing. Bring a variety of sizes and shapes, no taller than 10 inches. The activities will take place over 4 different sessions:
Nov. 2 - Glazing Day: You will bring your bisque pottery to my studio and use my glazes and flashing slips that are formulated for cone 10, reduction firing.
Nov. 8 - Loading Day: You will come to my kiln pad (at my studio) where we will discuss how the kiln works and how loading the pottery affects the outcome of the firing. Together, we will attach wads to pots and load your pottery into the kiln. This process can take several hours.
Nov. 9 - Firing Day: Early in the morning, I will light up the burners and the firing will commence. Depending upon a number of factors (the pots in the kiln, the weather, etc.), the firing may take 12, 14, 16 or more hours. You may attend all or some of the firing. There are two particularly interesting bursts of activity that I would recommend attending. Throughout the firing, I will explain what is happening inside the kiln and atmospheric firing in general. You will help with all aspects of the day, including observing flames and cones, record keeping, adjusting dampers and spraying soda.
Nov. 15 - Unloading Day: The kiln will need to cool before we can unbrick the door and unload the pots. At this last gathering, we will observe and discuss how the flames contributed to the surfaces. We will also discuss and begin the process of “cold working” to remove wads or surface blemishes. Finally, the participants will assist with kiln pad clean up.
Most appropriate for students with some experience with clay. This experience is intended as an add-on to taking a class with me, though that is not a requirement to participate. If you will not be in a class with me leading up to the firing, please email me to verify that the clay you will be using is suitable and will not melt at cone 10.
Soda firing is an activity inherently involving some risk. Participants should be aware of the risks of close proximity to flame and potentially sharp objects. Please dress and behave accordingly. I will provide personal protective equipment appropriate for the various tasks (goggles, gloves, etc.).

3-Week Wheel Throwing Class
This is a series of three 3-hour classes at my studio. The first class will introduce you to wheel throwing; during class in the second week you will trim those pieces, and in the third week you will glaze your pots.
Clay will be provided for you to make pieces. You may borrow my tools or purchase a beginner’s set of tools. Please bring an old bath-sized towel.
Pick up of finished pieces can be arranged, or you may choose to pay to have them shipped to you.
No sessions are scheduled, please check back later.

1-Time Taste of Clay Experience
Are you brand new to clay and want to see what all the fuss is about? This is a 3-hour class at my studio that will give you a taste of working with clay.
Clay will be provided for you to make pieces. At the end of the class, you may choose a glaze that I will apply after a bisque firing. Pick up of finished pieces can be arranged, or you may choose to pay to have them shipped to you.
Wheel throwing and handbuilding options are available. Not sure which to choose? If you don’t mind getting messy I recommend trying the wheel. If you are more interested in having a final piece that is functional, I recommend handbuilding.
Rates will vary between wheel throwing and handbuilding. 5 is the current maximum number of wheel throwing students I can accommodate; I can fit more students if the class is handbuilding.
No sessions are scheduled, please check back later.
Come learn pottery with me!
I am an experienced instructor with my hands in clay since 2008.
I would love to teach you how to make objects out of clay.
Please be aware that my studio is located in a relatively remote area outside of Boone and Blowing Rock, NC. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes from that direction. In the event of severe weather, it may be necessary to reschedule your class until you can travel here safely. I will provide my address and detailed directions upon enrollment in a class.
I own two dogs who will not attend classes with you, but they may leave dog hair in the studio from time to time. I do my best to clean the studio regularly, but if you have allergies to dogs, please let me know so that I can accommodate your needs.
